MAP Concentration Words

As the MAP test is approaching us, each week Concord School will focus on two vocabulary words. These words are important vocabulary that they will need to know the meaning of on the test. One focus word will be in the area of Communication Arts, and the other vocabulary word is from the area of Math. These words will be discussed throughout the week at school. Please look for these words at the beginning of each week and review the words with your child. Our words this week are narrator and congruent. Please ask your child if they are familiar with these words.

Update 1/16/12

Hope everyone enjoyed the three day weekend and the beautiful weather we had today.

Tuesday the third graders have the opportunity to participate in Ability Awareness. We will spend the afternoon meeting people with different abilities and learn that we are all more alike than different.

  • We will meet Nancy Martin who will talk about having cerebral palsy.

  • We will learn all about the life and daily challenges of being blind. We will learn how they problem-solve like cooking and telling the difference between bills in their wallet.

  • We will meet Dianne Peters who is the Program Director of CHAMP Assistance Dogs. She will bring her own trained support dog for an active presentation about the program and some of the dog’s duties and skills. She will discuss the kinds of dogs used, how they are trained, and how people with special needs may benefit from a special CHAMP helper. The children will appreciate the value of the support dogs and how they assist people with special needs.

  • We will meet Esther Murray who is hearing impaired and has teamed with Kara Simmons, director of the sign school at Concordia Seminary, who will sign and translate as Esther relives moments in life and shares her experiences living in a “hearing” world. The children will be introduced to sign language and will practice with Esther and Kara.

This is always such a wonderful day, and I look forward to the students being a part of it.

This week the students have their math test over chapters 15-16 (graphs and data) on Wednesday, Jan. 18th.

We are beginning our second chapter over economics in social studies this week.

In reading we are working on identifying the different text features in nonfiction.

Six Flags

Today your child is bringing home their reading log to earn a free Six Flags ticket. Each child is encouraged to read a minimum of 6 hours between now and Feb. 20th. I would love to see the whole class earn a free ticket. I share with the students that if they already get a season pass to Six Flags, then they can still earn a free ticket and invite a friend to join them one day at Six Flags.

Look for the yellow paper in your child's folder today and return it on Feb. 21st. Happy reading....

Happy 2012

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday.

When we return, we will be jumping right back into multiplication. Please have your child study their flashcards that we made in class. While we are working on multiplication, we will also be working on data and graphing in math.

In social studies, we will begin our unit of study on economics.

I can't wait to hear about everybody's break! See you tomorrow!
